In the centre of Peniche, a 1960s apartment tells a singular story: that of the Fortress, the guards who once lived there, and the transformation of a place of rigour into a welcoming harbour by the sea.
From stone to the present
An apartment with singular origins
The apartment now known as Casa do Guarda was erected around 1960 through prison labour tied to the Peniche Fortress. Its walls were built to house the Fortress's prison guards and their families, at a time when the city still lived under the shadow of the country's most notorious political prison.
There is a deep symbolism in this house: the same apartment that was born in an age of confinement and rigour has become a harbour of freedom, study and hospitality. Here, ESTM students and teachers find quiet to work; in summer, families and travellers find a calm home steps from the sea.
The construction quality of the era is an advantage today. The solid masonry load-bearing walls offer natural thermal mass and acoustic insulation rarely found in more recent builds. We paired them with thermal- and acoustic-insulated window frames, electric shutters, 1 Gbps internet and every comfort of a contemporary home.

Three moments, one house
From a prison-era construction to a renovated apartment: the apartment's history mirrors the history of Peniche itself.
The Construction
The apartment was erected around 1960 through prison labour tied to the Peniche Fortress. Solid housing was built to shelter the Fortress's prison guards and their families, at a time when the political prison still shaped the face of the city.
The Turning Point
With the Carnation Revolution of April 25th, the political prison was dismantled and Peniche opened a new chapter. The guards' housing stopped being part of a system of confinement and became part of the living memory of a community that looks to the sea with hope.
Renovation and Hospitality
Fully renovated, the apartment now welcomes ESTM teachers and students during the academic year, and families or travellers during the summer months. The same quiet that once kept watch now guards the rest of those who live here.
