Where to Stay in Peniche: Historic Centre or Baleal?
Peniche really has two lodging areas with very different personalities: the historic centre, on the peninsula by the Fortress, and Baleal, the surf village to the north. The right choice depends on what you're after.
Peniche Historic Centre
The peninsula where the city was born, by the Fortress and the fishing harbour. Narrow streets, local shops, the municipal market, and Porto de Areia Sul beach 10–11 minutes on foot. It's the most central and quietest area to sleep in, away from the busier tourist beach zones.
Who it suits:
Anyone who wants a calm base for remote work, families, ESTM teachers and students, or anyone who'd rather walk to the sea than drive.

Baleal
A peninsula connected to Peniche by an isthmus, about 10 minutes by car from the historic centre. It's the region's main surf hub, with waves for every level and an accommodation scene dominated by surf camps and hostels — great for an intensive week of surfing, but typically without a proper kitchen or a work desk, and with the louder atmosphere of a concentrated tourist area.
Who it suits:
Anyone going to Peniche mainly to surf intensively and wanting to be right by the wave, even at the cost of less autonomy (kitchen, quiet) than a central apartment.
About 10 minutes by car from Peniche's historic centre.

Baleal wins if being right by the wave is the priority and you don't mind giving up a proper kitchen and quiet. The historic centre wins for anyone who wants a base with more autonomy — a real kitchen, quiet, remote work — and doesn't mind a 10-minute drive to the beach.
