How Long to Stay in Peniche: 2- and 3-Day Itineraries
Two days are enough to cover the essentials of Peniche — historic centre, Fortress, beaches and surf. A third day leaves room for a trip to the Berlengas.
Historic centre, Fortress and beach — all on foot
A simple walking itinerary, no car needed, to cover the essentials of the city.
Municipal Market and historic centre
Start at the Municipal Market (9 min on foot from the apartment) and walk through the historic centre's streets up to the Fortress area.
Peniche Fortress
Visit the National Museum of Resistance and Freedom, housed in the old Fortress (10 min on foot) — the city's most significant history.
Porto de Areia Sul beach
Head down to the nearest beach to the centre (10–11 min on foot) for a few hours by the sea.
Seafront and fishing harbour
End the day by the fishing harbour, with views over the boats and, on clear days, the Berlengas in the distance.
Berlengas — a day trip
The Berlengas are about an hour by boat from Peniche's fishing harbour (6 min by car or 24 min on foot from the apartment). Most visitors do the trip in a single day, with a few hours on the island between the boat's arrival and departure.
Before you leave
Buy the BerlengasPass (mandatory, only at berlengaspass.icnf.pt) and a boat ticket from a licensed operator — book ahead, especially between June and September.
Crossing and arrival
About an hour by boat from Peniche's fishing harbour to the archipelago.
On the island
Fort of São João Baptista, the old lighthouse and short trails with cliff views, or a dive in the reserve's protected waters.
Return
Confirm the return boat time with your operator before planning the rest of the day — schedules vary by season.
Surf in Baleal or Supertubos
If you have a third day, it's worth dedicating it to surf — Baleal and Supertubos are 10–15 minutes by car or bus from the apartment.
Baleal or Consolação to start
Gentler waves, good for beginners or for watching the surf scene up close.
Supertubos or Lagide to watch
Competition-level waves — worth seeing more experienced surfers in action, even without getting in the water.
Berlengas boat schedules and sea conditions vary by season — always confirm with your chosen operator before planning the day.

Casa do Guarda is in Peniche's historic centre — walkable from Day 1 and Day 2's fishing harbour, minutes by car from Baleal for Day 3.
